David Baddiel

- In an exclusive interview, CALM patron David Baddiel talks to Rachel Clare, editor of the CALMzine, at last Friday’s epic London CALMtakeover at Topman. David tells us below just how depression can hit a bloke, and how we can learn to start talking about it.

It’s not a question of pulling yourself together. Pulling yourself is something you can do if you feel a bit sad. But it has almost no relationship to feeling a bit sad. It has more relationship to a physical illness. So you wouldn’t say to someone with pneumonia, pull yourself together. You’d try and give them something that got them to a place of health. Young men in particular don’t understand that that’s what they might have. Making that clear that depression is an illness, might make it easier for men to talk about. Because they can talk about having an illness, but they can’t talk about feeling bad.

Watch the rest of the interview above. There’s much more to come from the legendary London CALM takeover last Friday.

A brave effort at adressing a serious problem . We can easily sit and criticise your efforts from the fence . But that dont cause change .eh? its in trying to help and having a go that we can tweek what we do until we get better outcomes . The real problem here is also a general cynicism and fear of psychiatry. Also a non acceptance of ourselves , our own labelling of ourselves. People need to trust . If the problem needs addressing here we need to look at the whole person . Friends and social engagement , diet , excercise , fresh air , trust again, food , sleep, focus . AND JEREMY CLASRKSON !! no that was a JOKE !!
ta and respect , Dave Bananas
