“The Wages of Fear” is out now on Naim Edge Records
Next we have top lads and critically acclaimed blues / garage / rock ‘n’ rollers The Cubical who have decided to support CALM this Christmas with their latest single! The Cubical – The Golden Rule – Christmas Charity Single for CALM – out 12/12/2011The Golden Rule is marked departure from The Cubical’s trademark growling garage blues and displays a gentler side already showcased on album tracks like Would Be Lovers, All Is Well and Paper Walls from the band’s critically acclaimed albums Come Sing These Crippled Tunes and It Ain’t Human.A string section even appears on this beautifully poetic and witty ballad that focuses on the miserable side of yuletide but which is still full of enough festive cheer for a good old fireside sing along. Infectious B side Hey Hey is a previously unreleased track from the Come Sing These Crippled Tunes sessions and finds The Cubical back on familiar blues infused Rock n Roll territory with speaker piercing vocals and slide guitars. All proceeds from the single are going to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) which was set up to reduce the high suicide rate amongst men under 35, currently the single biggest killer of young men in the UK.

“It Ain’t Human” is out now on Halfpenny Records

“Ever wondered what might happen if Tom Waits and The Rolling Stones got together for an old fashioned jam and Nick Cave stopped by to bum a cigarette? This is one of the most vital records of the year, The Cubical may just be your new favourite band. 4.5 /5″ (Sydney Morning Herald -Australia)

“Guitars clang and the bass and drums shuffle just right enough to raise the ghost of Willie Dixon, track down Captain Beefheart circa Safe As Milk and have a chat wtih The La’s. And the singers raspy vocal might just shatter your lightbulbs” – (Mojo)

“Wilson makes Waits sound like Tiny Tim” (The Guardian)

“Compared to other Liverpool bands, The Cubical stand out for a mile as the demented, disheveled, brilliant band they are. “ (THE FLY MAG)

“The rumble of Great White Lie is enough to make a listener fear divine retribution, hide the children and close the curtains.” (Spin magazine – USA)

“Like Nick Cave but more intense, Tom Waits but more melodramatic, Beefheart but bluesier… the sound of a cataclysm!” Album of the month – Ruta 66 Mag (Spain)

An amalgamation of blues, soul, garage, free jazz and psychedelia… A truly wonderful album and a highlight of the year so far’ – (Artrocker )

‘If you like your rock’n'roll primal and pounding, and your vocals gritty and growly, then meet Liverpool’s answer to the Magic Band’ – (The Guardian )

“A frighteningly good album, if you dont like The Cubical you are stupid. Easy . 9/10.” (Music News- Norway)

“The Cubical are ready to drag rock n roll kicking and screaming back into the light. You have been warned” Bido Lito

“Mind-warpin’ mutated blues. Don’t let it pass you by.” (Shindig)

“The Cubical are simply a sensational band.” (Popular 1 Mag – Spain)

A trembling and yet raucous collection of songs… Think Tom Waits mixed with Detroit Cobras into the heady cocktail. Lovely stuff.’ 4/5- (Big Cheese Mag )

Christmas Singles!

  1. Hallo,

We were sent the single and these are the words that’ll be going up tomorrow evening.

    WASHING WITH GIN!
THE CUBICAL “THE GOLDEN RULE” (BANDCAMP @ £1.49)
    RELEASED? Out now.
SOUNDS LIKE? Well, it’s all in aid of the rather wonderfully monikered charity ‘Campaign Against Living Miserably’ so it’d be uncharitable to suggest that it comes in all over wrought and sheepishly ham fisted in it’s attempt to wriggle into the space reserved for ‘Fairytale Of New York’, so we won’t suggest that, oh no, because when it hits it’s stride, around 1.02, oh yes… That’s when the chorus and the strings drift in and then the violin starts to chop, rather than saw and there’s strong words about ‘sucking the good out of everything’ and the boys of the NYPD choir start taking an interest and I start crying and it’s all rather lovely and tough and moving
IS IT ANY GOOD? It’s one of the classic Christmas songs, it’ll take the world a while to catch on, but you can blaze a trail for less than two quid. Do so.
