The first time i heard this track i was on the sticky dance floor of some indie club in Camden Town, it’s an amazing piece of dance music but at the time i was in no state to pay any attention to the lyrics.
It wasn’t until i sat down and listened to it home i realised that it’s more then just a song to dance to.
The songs was written by Kele Okereke and i believe it is his way of doing what most men find hard to do…talk about matters of the heart. “Flux” featured on the re-released version of Bloc Party’s second studio album, “A Weekend in the City” and reached number 8 in the UK singles chart.
FLUX by BLOC PARTY
If your right hand is causing you pain
Cut it off cut it off
If your colors have started to run
Let them all run, run away from you
There is lightning in this room
Above our heads waiting to strike
I’m a thinker not a talker
Put your faith, your faith in God
We were hoping for some romance
All we found was more despair
We must talk about our problems
We are in a state of Flux
I’d kill for an adventure
Just you and I in the Curzon Bar
Dancing till we knew
So all that we’ve learned disappeared
When you shouted at me
I saw my father in the second grade
Concerned and kind
But yet unable to reach me
We were hoping for some romance
All we found was more despair
We must talk about our problems
We are in a State of Flux
State of Flux
We need to talk

The bit that really stands out to me: I’m a thinker not a talker
When i’m around friends, out in public. I’m a thinker not a talker, always have been.
The quietest people have the loudest minds.

That’s very true Jacob, are you fan of bloc party? what other bands or songs stand out to you in terms of powerful lyrics?
Thanks Sam. I like them yeah. Not sure, umm, i love Dallas Green’s lyrics and his voice is F-ing fantastic! I went to see them (City and Colour) live a while back and it was just incredible! I listen to way to much music though!
