‘Every Man’ illustrations: Dating

‘Every Man’ illustrations

by Chris Sav

When I was on a dating site I thought I’d copy and paste my Fine Art MA application into the ‘About Me’ section. Needless to say, I didn’t get any messages.

The whole dating thing is something I find rather bewildering, with several factors that I can’t begin to comprehend. I have a serious problem with punctuality, in that I am always late – I believe the term is ‘severely time challenged’. Once I finally get there, how should I stand? How can I avoid any lulls in conversation? What inane task can I occupy myself with when we inevitably encounter a lull? (perhaps a sudden interest in the way the bubbles float in my pint of Kronenbourg) And what of the aftermath? The feelings I have after a date are similar to those I have after a job interview, anxiety and the expectation of a rejection email in my inbox two days later.
‘It’s all a bit too much,’ I say to myself as I settle in with a copy of Persuasion, hoping to get some tips from Captain Wentworth.
