INTERVIEW: CALM film maker Ivan Madeira

A year ago Adam Thorn interviewed CALM supporter and film maker Ivan Madeira about his trilogy of short films and his plans to turn them in to an independently funded feature film called the Kick Inside (TKI). The first interview can be found HERE. Ivan’s first short film, a very funny coming of age work called Grow Up, is being shown on Community Channel this Saturday (Sky Channel 539/ Virgin Channel 233/ Freeview Channel 87) and Adam caught up with Ivan to find out what he’s been up to since their last chat…

So Grow Up is on making it’s TV debut this weekend. How did that come about?

CALM entered it into the British Urban Film Festival and the contacts we made through that opened up the conversation with the Community Channel. There’s actually another film I was involved with showing on the same channel soon. Love Regardless. I was Director of Photography on that project. But Grow Up is in support of CALM and even has a snazzy CALM ident at the end that people can see on Saturday night, which is cool.

Grow Up is directly related to The Kick Inside, your most recent feature. How’s that project going?

The first act [of TKI] is directly influenced by Grow Up and it’s going alright. We’re finalising the final draft of the script at the moment. The script was the main delay – we felt there was no point pushing forward with funding on a script we felt could be improved on. William (Whitfeld, co writer) and I have worked hard on it.

Funding an independent film has to be a big ask…

We’re talking many thousands, but we’re crowd funding the project with the aim of getting the community involved and ideally people who are on board with our aims and the campaign message that CALM has. We hope the project will appeal and help build a community online. I see our relevance to CALM in terms of the subject matter of the film being the search for identity and how being an inbetweener can really affect your own personal growth and life within society. Crowd funding gives us a responsibility to this community, these fans. We literally owe them. We’re very thankful to CALM already and hopeful for the future too!

HUGE thanks and good luck to Ivan.  Big things to come, for sure…

Grow Up is being shown on this Saturday night, 6th April, at 00:20 on the Community channel – Sky Channel 539/ Virgin Channel 233/ Freeview Channel 87.
