World Cup Fever … in 2015??!!
Yes that’s right, World Cup fever is once again about to grip the nation … or at least a small corner of North London … as the Lan the Baron 5-a-side ‘World Cup’ tournament gets set to enter its 4th fundraising year.
Sixteen teams, representing great footballing nations, will compete through group leagues and a knockout tournament in a day-long event at Downhills Park, N15, on Sunday 5th July. The tournament was launched in 2012 by the family and friends of Lanfranco ‘the Baron’ Gaglione, to raise funds and awareness on behalf of CALM, and has gone from strength to strength, now taking its place as the chief fundraising activity for the Lan the Baron Foundation.
This year will see the familiar set up of winners trophies, refreshment tents and great football but with some added extras to enhance the event: “We’re really excited about some of the changes we’ve made to this year’s tournament,” says lead organiser Giancarlo Gaglione, “The big change this year is the arrival of the ‘Wooden Spoon’ tournament, which means that the teams which don’t make it through to the ‘KnockOut’ stages still get to compete in a ‘runners-up’ competition, thus playing a minimum of four matches as opposed to the previous years’ three.”
This year players will be able to enter either as a team or individuals. In addition, the organisers are introducing some cool new technology to plan and run the league tables, which players can access via their mobiles. “People come to this tournament to have a great time, so more games, less restrictions, and a more modern way to organise it, just makes sense,” says Giancarlo.
But the question on everyone’s lips …. Will his mum, Mrs Gaglione, be making her famous spring rolls at this year’s event? “Ha ha, yes the spring rolls are always very popular aren’t they? I’ll make sure I get the orders in!”. Relief all round!
Register for your place in the tournament by 16 June 2015 to qualify for an early bird price of £10 per ticket, as opposed to the standard £15. Register a whole team for £50.
