POEM: Too Many Mutes

Too Many Mutes by Chama Kay

He goes to court
a thousand times a day
in his head
and always
finds himself guilty

Every past failure
missed opportunity
an old new crime
another reason to lock himself
in a prison he designed

That’s all in his mind
mind you
he’s convinced
it’s not all about himself

Sleepless nights over
the loved ones
he knows he never treated right
the seas of sorrow are deep
he deserves to sink
he thinks

Or is it the system
he found himself in
where men who need help
are seen as helpless
and to be strong you must be selfless

Your only task
is to put your feelings last
a twisted contradiction
our definition of masculinity
might need some reflection

Because he looks through eyes
of anger and hatred
these are the only emotions
left in his make up

In the mirror
he sees the face of a man
he can no longer stand
nobody taught him how to live

The world told him
that the emotions he was born with
made him soft and too sensitive
nobody taught him how to love

And the contradiction kicks in

Everything has a meaning
how can people be truly touched
if they have lost all their feeling
this is the language of our soul
and we have too many mutes

Only able to speak from the heart
when the moment that called for their words
has passed
and like many other men
all he’s left with
is an ever growing regrets list

Men of Britain
I think it’s time
to change this
