The Sides of March 2017

This March, feel the burn!

March sees the return of The Sides of March, your opportunity to use the sides of that lovely head of yours to raise funds and awareness to prevent male suicide.

What is it?

The Sides Of March is a foundation set up by a group of mates in memory of a friend they lost to suicide.

Last year Adam Torr, Chi Anyanwu, Joel Baynes, Scott Bradley, Pos Apostolou, Tom Elvin and David Boynes and their friends and family set out to do something fun and positive to raise awareness of male suicide.

Adam Torr says:

“The campaign provided a channel for all our mixed emotions and also a sort of platform for personal therapy. It really helped me and many of our friends through a really difficult time in our lives. We were able to channel that energy to hopefully create something good, and to help other people who may find themselves in a similar situation to our friend.”

The Sides of March raised a staggering £16,500 for CALM, in just four weeks! This year the burns are back, bigger and better and hairier than before.

So how do I take part?

Easy: grow some sideburns in the month of March and follow a few simple steps:

  • Sign up at
  • Set up your Sides Of March JustGiving page.
  • During March, grow some ‘burns (see below for instructions).
  • Ask your employers for support and get your Dad/colleagues/friends/football team to join in.
  • Tell the world: strut your stuff on social, host your own Burns Night and turn every query about your new facial hair into a great conversation about CALM, masculinity and male suicide.

Burns beginners guide

You can start from scratch or trim existing facial hair and sculpt the best ‘burns you possibly can. The Sides of March team massively encourages the latter for a bigger ‘burn. Ideally do this from March 1st for the whole month, but you can take part at any point during the month– just make sure you register online.

In order to achieve official sideburn status, facial hair cannot be connected below the mouth. However, a moustache connection is permitted and, in certain cases, positively encouraged!

How do my Burns get onto the Burners Hall of Fame?

Those of you who grow some extra epic sideburns can enter the Burners Hall of Fame by sending us your pictures to The best side burn of the year will win the prestigious Caesar award, with the honour of being one of the hairy faces of next year’s campaign. Check out the 2016 winners here.

But what if I don’t have facial hair?

Fret not, baby face – you can also sponsor us without growing sideburns yourself and just help spread the word.

If you have lost someone to suicide, been close to people who have or simply just want to help, then we’d love you to join the Marching Army and help us to raise money to help prevent male suicide. More info:
