Goodbye CALMzine

We’re a little sad to say we’ll no longer be printing the notorious CALMzine, our quarterly lifestyle magazine, in its current form. With the rapid rise of podcasts, video and loads of exciting digital stuff, we have big opportunities to do a lot more with our funding to inspire young people – more on that soon…

For now we’d like to celebrate the magazine in all its glory… what a ride it’s been!

Since its humble beginnings in our tiny, smelly office in 2011; CALMzine has grown in stature, won awards and featured guest interviews as diverse as Scroobius Pip, Russell Brand, Professor Green and Prince William and Harry. Whether it’s raw discussions about dealing with anxiety, depression and sexuality or daft takes on how to survive a festival on a five pound budget – hundreds of writers, poets, artists and photographers have told great stories and shared their unique take on what it means to be a man. Most importantly, CALMzine got under the noses of thousands of young people all over the country and made them think, laugh and feel a bit better about the weird world we live in. This has all taken place during a period that’s seen awareness of suicide as the biggest killer of men under 45 almost quadruple.

The CALMzine approach remains core to what we do, dealing with the serious issues with creativity, humour and a celebration of young men alongside frank dissections of what masculinity means and does.

We’ll miss it. You might do too, or maybe this is the first time you’ve even heard of it. Regardless, have a flick through some of the issues and celebrate seven colourful and hilarious years of CALMzine.

That one with Goldie doing yoga…

That one with a manual on how to build a rocket…

All the incredible art shows…

The wanking advice…

That time we chatted to Prince William and Harry…

Our unprofessional agony uncle, Dear Josh…

That one with comedy genius Stephen Merchant…

When we had lunch with Russell Brand to chat addiction, spirituality and cuddling hard men…

That time we won a Mind Media Award…

ETERNAL THANKS TO…

TOPMAN for generously funding the magazine, Rachel Clare, Jane Powell, Jo Furnival, Silvina De Vita, Theobald Fox, Jack Rooke, Kevin Braddock, Josh Idehen, Chris Owen, Graham Goddard, Jonny Benjamin, Ben Tallon, Joe Goldman, Mister Mumbles, Hannah Goodwin, Chris Sav and hundreds of writers, artists, photographers, musicians and illustrators. Special thanks to Symbian Print Intelligence for a consistently great job over the years.

We’re so grateful to the many volunteers who distributed CALMzine all over the UK, packing envelopes and recruiting stockists. And for the hundreds of bars, clubs, unions, shops and record stores who stocked the magazine. Lastly, to all you readers – thank you!
