Last year Irish mega stars Kodaline took a break from selling out venues worldwide to strip things back and surprise their fans by busking on London streets in aid of CALM. Now they’re back with a new album, a worldwide tour and a new video for their single ‘Shed A Tear’.
We caught up with Frontman Steve Garrigan to learn about the message behind their new song.

The busking had such a huge impact for CALM, have you found that mental health has become part of your discussion with fans and the media since?
I’ve had a lot of fans open up to me about their struggles with anxiety and depression. As someone who’s lived with generalised anxiety for a long time, I know how difficult and lonely it can be. Creating and writing music has always been my release, so to hear that it has helped even a few fans going through tough times means the world to me. In recent times I love how people are letting go of fear, opening up and talking more, it’s so important.

Tell us about the message behind ‘Shed A Tear’.
It’s simple, it’s about empathy. It’s a song about being there for someone. The video was made by a very talented up and coming director from Dublin called James Fitzgerald. We shot it close to our homes in a big barn on a farm of all places. We hung out for the day with all the actors and crew, it was a lot of fun to make and we’re very proud of how it turned out.
How are you feeling about the upcoming tour?
Our new album ‘Politics Of Living’ is out on the 10 August, we’re busy getting ready to go back on the road. We’ll be heading around Europe and America this year, pretty much playing a different city every night for close to three months. Next year we’ll be going to a lot of new places, particularly in Asia and we’ll also be announcing a UK tour at some point. Playing live is what we love to do and what we’re best at, I’m excited to play new songs to new and old fans around the world.
Be honest, when is the last time you shed a tear?
To be honest I cried the other night watching America’s got talent on Netflix, some of the contestants stories are so emotional! I’m a bit of a softy.
