Amethysts: “Music is like an outlet for your emotions”

With a bunch of praise from music blogs around the world already, Amethysts have just released their latest offering. ‘How It Is’ is a poignant song, with a touching video to accompany it. We caught up with the band to hear about the themes behind their music.

Tell us about the video and the message behind it…

The video for How It Is touches on a few topics that we feel passionate about, and something that is very important in the modern world we live in. The main focus is on men not feeling like they can share their emotions because of a fear of being judged or belittled. We all have emotions no matter our gender, race, size etc, and they are the most powerful chemicals that consume us and define us as a person. None of us should be made to feel like the way we are feeling is wrong in anyway.

The video is based on a story of a close friend of ours, who struggled through a really intense relationship, eventually leading to a bad break up and thinking he was alone and couldn’t talk about how he really felt, and how he was struggling, as he felt it was perceived as a sign of weakness being a man. By the time he eventually opened up to us about it, he was not in a good place. It broke our hearts.

It was a really sobering experience and we wanted to try to help raise awareness.

What do you hope people take away from it?

I think generally we just hope that the video helps open up discussions around toxic masculinity and helps break down the stereotypical depiction of a ‘man’. Music can be a powerful way of getting messages across, and hitting a nerve with some people.

Do you find that music allows you to get things off your chest and express yourself?

Definitely! Music is like an outlet for your emotions, we both find it quite freeing. Like if you write something down sometimes it can really help you understand and hone in on how you actually feel towards a topic or a situation. Everyone can relate to a certain song/a piece of music in some shape or form.

What’s next for Amethysts?

Music-wise we’ve been doing a lot of writing recently. After selling out London headline shows, and our debut single reaching over a million plays on Apple Music last year, the recording of our first EP is in full swing.
