CALM works to prevent male suicide, the single biggest cause of death for men aged under 45 in the UK, so thinking about the needs of male employees who may be in crisis or down is something we believe every employer should take seriously. We’ve found that the level of male suicide is something people are shocked by and, frankly, getting men involved in CALM isn’t something we’ve ever had a problem with. The problem has consistently been taking their calls, and physically managing the huge amount of support we get. As an employer, we’d like you to engage in our campaign and help us to deliver support to your employees.
In 2014, we launched The Year of the Male in an effort to increase recognition of the particular needs, expectations and pressures on men – and to encourage employers, service provides to make sure their services are meeting men’s needs. The Year of the Male is a year-long campaign from the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), which aims to make it easier for men to ask for and access help when they’re down or hit a wall. We’re asking employers to show they understand and care about the needs of their male workforce by pledging support for the CALM in the following ways:
Become an office supporter of one of our pivotal services – whether this be the helpline / texting service, our award-winning magazine or our website. In return we’ll be very happy to promote your support for the campaign via our website.
Help to keep our helpline and web chat service going, whether that’s for a week or a month, or help us ensure we can pay for one person to take calls for an entire year. Our helpline service is open 5pm-midnight every day of the year. Calls are confidential and anonymous. Calls are taken by trained and skilled helpline workers who provide support, information and signposting to callers. We signpost to national agencies unless the caller lives within a CALMzone (see below), in which case we are able to signpost to local agencies. This service is caller led, confidential and anonymous. Calls can last from a few minutes to over an hour. We take about 5,000 calls per month.
Our award winning magazine, CALMzine, is a free quarterly men’s lifestyle title, circulated physically in Topman stores across the UK as well as student unions, bars, record shops, independent retailers and cultural/music venues across London – it is also available online HERE. The magazine discusses music, culture, sport & all things relevant to guys, as well as touching on the more serious topic of mental health in an accessible way, in order to normalise the discussion in order to encourage men to share their problems and seek help if they need it. Our readers are predominantly men aged 25-34, who are interested in music, culture & comedy. 75% of our readers read CALMzine regularly.
Our website, thecalmzone.net, is a lively and engaging site aimed at men of all ages who may need help and information about a whole range if issues, as well as providing them with engaging and entertaining content, such as from our resident illustrative story teller, Chris Sav, or interviews with well known musicians and artists. We publish first person experiential articles written by the men we seek to support, about anything from hair loss and bullying at work, to OCD and suicidal feelings. We host a large database of agencies who can offer further support, as well as creating a lively hub where supporters can sign up to the campaign, get involved, take action and keep up with the latest CALM news. We currently receive about 30,000 unique visitors a month to the site.
PROMOTE CALM TO STAFF
CALM engages men, who are notoriously difficult to reach with the usual health messages; we use men’s peers and voices with an innovative mix of first hand stories, music, entertainment sport and comedy. We can offer all sponsors 1:1 meetings to share insight and advice on the best ways to encourage men to ask for, and access, help. We can provide you with marketing materials to promote our services, including copies of our award winning CALMzine.

CALM’s image, our marketing and advertising, have been provided pro-bono over the years by companies interested in supporting us and lending their voice to ours. Indeed, the support we’ve had from corporates such as Ogilvy, TMW, Metro, Topman, National Rail and MTV has been invaluable to us and our ongoing campaign.
