My son Corey didn't get to see his 19th birthday.
Corey was a very out there type of person. He participated in a lot of different sports. Corey started horse riding at the age of 5. He competed in Pony club until his early teens. Corey also like rugby league football (along side two of his brothers), gridiron football and also enjoyed dance for many years. Corey was very much my wild child trying many different things.
I have a very funny but painful (for him) memory of Corey at a family Barbeque where he decide to make his own tandem pushbike. He took the front wheel off one bike and attached it to the rear of another. Him and his brother tried to ride the bike down the hill and when he lifted the front of the rear bike it came off the front bike and he face planted into the concrete path. This is one of many adventurous things he tried.
We had no idea Corey was suffering from any form of depression so I am hoping that this campaign will help people to understand that speaking about issues is totally ok. Maybe if we had known ways to educate my son that it isn't weak to speak when we are suffering with issues that maybe things would be different.
I never knew anyway to speak about depression or bring the subject up with my children when we lost Corey. I also never knew what signs to look for to assist with understanding depression.
Suicide is a subject that should be talked about more with family and friends.
