Stick The Kettle On... for a chat with Lucy Spraggan

Lucy Spraggan has come a long way since independently releasing her debut album in 2011. She's currently in the middle of a world tour and has just released a brilliant new single, 'Stick The Kettle On', in support of CALM. We caught up with her to talk music, mental health and making brews...

Lucy, you’ve just kicked off a world tour. Where in the world are you right now and what have you been getting up to?

Right now I'm in Boston, MA in the USA! We arrived here yesterday after a super fun show in Toronto, Canada. We've been quite a bit jet-lagged but have been sampling the local beers to help...

Nice! Stick The Kettle On has just been released, along with a top video, tell us about the story behind that song...

Stick The Kettle On is a song about making sure you are looking after yourself and your friends. We live in such a fast-paced environment at the moment and sometimes it's so easy to miss the signs that something isn't OK. Like my best mate says, 'There's nothing a good brew can't fix.'

How did the collaboration with Scouting for Girls come about?

We've played a lot of the same festivals over the past few years, and we kept running into each other. We swapped numbers and it kind of just came from there! He's a great lad.

You’re using this song to raise awareness of CALM and of mental health issues – why did you decide to do that?

I've had my own struggles and know that a lot of people are having them too right now. I want my music to remind people that we are all in the same boat and that it's ok not to be ok.

Some of the musicians that we've worked with have told us that music allows them a therapeutic platform for expression – is this something that resonates with you?

Definitely. Writing music, for me, is a way to express myself and my feelings. Sometimes I sing about things I would find quite hard to talk about, so for me it's a great outlet. I love hearing what people take from the songs too, that's an amazing feeling.

What are your plans for the next few months?

I finish up in the USA and Canada in October and then leave straight for Ireland and my UK tour. Then onto Europe! I'd love to say I'm going to sit down for a while after that but it's all hands on deck as I'm releasing my 5th album early 2019!
