‘Every Man’ illustrations

A couple of years ago, I was in a book shop with a friend who turned to me and said, ‘here, you could do with reading this.’ It was some sort of guide to flirting. Standing in the self-help section, I began reading about the various ways that, in a bar/club, one can discern whether someone is interested in you. Apparently if she looks at you for one second, looks away, then looks again for three seconds, that is what’s known as a ‘green light.’
I couldn’t quite comprehend how attraction could be broken down into such precise timings. Did this also apply to the way men expressed their interest in other males? What if I unwittingly counter the green light by happening to blow my nose within that three second gap?
The following week I found myself at a club, wondering if I was standing the right way, holding my glass at the right angle, blinking the correct amount of times, hoping that I was not standing in a sea of red lights. I almost yearned for those days at school, where someone would just throw a scrunched up ball of paper at your head to let you know they liked you.
